Energy Assets was set the task of delivering a new gas connection and meter across a busy highway to one of the UK’s leading retailers. The challenge was to complete and have gas in less than 4 weeks....
The job entailed

Project manager for this was Richard Collinson, Richard is a Technical Services Engineer for Siteworks, Richard worked closely with the client Carmel and the local authority to ensure a fatstrack gas service was installed to enable the store to open on time, without the extra costs of a temporary energy supply as had originally been identified as a solution because the retailer wanted to open before christmas 2011. This solution was before Energy Assets was approached to look at the job.
Timeline
28th October 2011 - Meeting with the customer and Wakefield Council as a very busy road (Denby Dale Road) required crossing with the new gas supply. A christmas embargo in place meant that the council would not normally allow works to take place until after Christmas.
Normal lead time for Section 50 application with the council is a minimum of 4 weeks. Due to the relationship with the council a meeting was arranged and it was agreed that works could commence even though the Christmas embargo was in place with the road crossing being completed over 2 consecutive Sundays
31st October - Design approval obtained from the network owner
2nd November- On site works commence - Issues encountered on site whereby following trial holes and excavations at the site it had become apparent that EA could no longer locate the meter kiosk as originally requested due to the presence of High Voltage cables that are encased within concrete.
4th November - Additional site meeting - alternative location for the kiosk within the existing trolley bay along the original route was agreed (issues encountered on site but resolved within a few days)
13th November - The first half of the road crossing was undertaken and completed
20th November - The final half of the road crossing was undertaken and the connection to the parent main completed
21st November - The meter and chatterbox were installed and all reinstatement works completed- project handed over all works complete
23rd November - Hand over to the client
30th November - Store opening
The normal planning process for a job of this size would be 6-8 weeks and because of the Christmas embargo works potentially could have taken until January to complete.
The above demonstrates our customer centric approach to Siteworks
What the client had to say....
Dear Richard
RE: SSL Ings Road Wakefield Project. Connection of New Gas Supply
Following on from the successful completion of the SSL Sainsbury's Store Project, Ings Road, Wakefield, we would like to pass on our thanks to the team involved in ensuring the timely completion of the new gas supply under a strict and demanding program.
The project was a very quick start for the site team and of very short duration. Upon notification of the scope of works, a site meeting was called between ourselves, energy assets and the local council. At this point, all parties were of full understanding of the task required to be carried out which included a section of private land to be passed through and a road crossing of a major trunk road close to Wakefield town centre.
The local council showed flexibility and understanding in allowing us to work through the Christmas embargo and energy assets showed a level of commitment above and beyond what would normally be expected by agreeing to work on Sundays at short notice to ensure the gas pipework was installed within the time constraints placed upon us all.
Once site work was underway, several problems were encountered with the presence of existing HV cables and the footing of the building. Energy Assets reacted immediately with site attendance and a re-design. Despite these problems, the project was managed through to completion within the original dates given and we were able to utilise a live gas supply in time for store opening.
As a result of the above, our client has avoided any costs and disruption that would have arisen should a temporary heating system have been installed and us as the site team have been able to complete our works fully in time for handover, which. on a 6 week program, has been recognised by all as an excellent achievement.
Regards
Chris Roberts Project Manager
