Since 2005 we have installed over half a million gas metering assets across the country.
Our engineers are used to working in a way that minimises disruption, however sometimes unexpected complexities can arise when they are on a job.
We would like to take this opportunity, during Gas Safety Week 2020, to highlight the expertise of our engineers and demonstrate how highly competent and equipped they are to tackle any technical complexity out in the field.
Below are just a handful of recent examples where our highly skilled team identified and resolved a problem during a job.
Teamwork is key
Kenny Johnston, one of our expert engineers, was on a meter exchange job for a site that fed multiple properties housing vulnerable customers, as well as a place of worship. The tightness test our engineer undertook identified that a 4mbar escape was present on the customer’s outlet. We immediately arranged for an excavation team from Energy Assets Utilities (EAU), based out of our Stirling office, and a team of two was mobilised immediately to get the customer back on gas as soon as possible.
The EAU engineers excavated a path and traced the leak to a fitting underground. This was repaired quickly and the excavation was back-filled. After this work the job passed the tightness test, the installation was purged and the site was back on gas by 6.30pm.
This is a great example of teamwork and expertise throughout the Energy Assets Group.
As well as our own in-house experts, we also work closely with highly audited and vetted contractors. When a large power station in the west of England had a safety device activated, we arranged for one of our trusted contractors to attend. If the safety device is activated on this particular site it could have huge implications on the function of the business, so it was imperative that we attended as soon as possible to minimise any impact.
The engineers attended site within a couple of hours and, after following industry and Energy Assets’ engineering procedures, were able to re-establish the gas supply by resetting the safety device.
The job was completed safely and efficiently with minimal impact to the customer.
Compassion for customers
At a hospital built for patients with COVID-19 the on-site engineer recognised some pressure issues whilst commissioning appliances. Following a request from the customer to attend the next day we arranged for one of our experienced engineers to carry out some diagnostics. Whilst on-site our engineer, Phil Ridsdale, identified that the outlet working pressure was 20mbar and for the site to operate efficiently the pressure needed to be increased.
The regulator was adjusted to 23mbar and a load assessment completed. Our engineer completed all post-completion activities and ensured the customer was updated with the relevant works undertaken.
