One year on from the opening of the northern hub at Ecclesfield, Sheffield, the operation is going from strength to strength, with more people, greater output and the successful launch of an innovative ‘triage’ technology recycling service.
Investment in the centre, which is home to metering services and gas network design, has enhanced operational performance, streamlined logistics, and delivered service innovations to our growing customer base.
Along with offices and warehousing, the hub includes customer meeting areas, training rooms and hot desking for group personnel. New procurement and logistics arrangements have seen the number of meters and other products distributed to engineers from the facility every week increase from 200 to 1500.
“Everyone who visits the Sheffield centre comments on the positive and welcoming atmosphere here,” said Gary McNicholas, Purchasing and Logistics Manager. “There’s a real family environment and we are delighted with what we have achieved so far both for the company, for the growing number of people who work here and for our customers.
“One of the biggest successes has been the creation of the triage area,” said Gary. “Working closely with colleagues in engineering and compliance, this specialist team checks and recycles components from meter assets returned to base – this ensures that valuable resources used sustainably. As a result, over 2500 refurbished assets have been installed for customers.”
The Ecclesfield workforce now stand at 35, an increase of nine people over the year in a variety of roles – from procurement specialists to young apprentices just starting out. When the field engineers are added in, the centre provides support for more than 60 people.
