Gas Safety Always Comes First…Even in a Pandemic

At Energy Assets safety always comes first and always will!

So, when the COVID-19 crisis struck, we developed and applied new working practices to our gas meter exchange and installation operations to ensure the continued safety of our engineers and our customers.

“At first, the focus was on emergency engineering teams standing by to restore and maintain the supply to critical installations, such as hospitals, but as the lockdown eased, these new working practices were spread throughout the whole of the metering business,” said Glen Dale, Head of Compliance at Energy Assets.

These new arrangements will remain in place for the foreseeable future and include an updated risk assessment and planning processes to ensure that our engineers can not only operate safely onsite but that they do not present a risk to customers. This means advance communication via the planning team to check that no-one onsite is displaying COVID-19 symptoms, have an elevated health risk or are in close contact with a vulnerable person.

At the same time, we have developed and applied new working practices for engineers that cover travel to site, personal hygiene, PPE, physical separation, and the use of antibacterial sprays and wipes on surfaces, tools and in vehicles.

“We have also established a dedicated COVID-19 portal with information and guidance for all team members, along with mandatory online training modules for everyone engaged in the metering business,” said Glen. “We also have a team of COVID Champions who act as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the business in advising and reassuring all employees.”

Through these arrangements, we have been able to meet the needs of our customers safely, including maintaining our 100% validation and audit process for installations.

Said Glen: “In Gas Safety Week, it is understandable that the focus should be on keeping people safe when they are using gas appliances, whether in households or businesses, but at Energy Assets we take pride in the development of the processes that end users do not see…but that are critical in safeguarding the wider community during the pandemic.”

Energy Assets partners with energy suppliers and businesses in the commercial and industrial sector, delivering around 25,000 meter installations and exchanges annually, including around 1,000 complex projects. We have installed over 500,000 gas metering assets since 2005.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Gas Safety Week and the focus is on community safety in these difficult times.   • Know the symptoms of CO poisoning; headaches, nausea, breathlessness, collapse, dizziness and loss of consciousness.
  • If you smell gas or think there might be a gas leak, call the free 24-hour national gas emergency number immediately on 0800 111 999.
  • Never attempt to work on a gas appliance yourself, always seek the help of a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer who can work on your gas cooker, boiler or fire in a safe way.
  • Don’t cut corners – only employ a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer when having gas work carried out in your home.
  • Always ask to see your engineer’s Gas Safe ID card. Make sure you check the back of the card, which will state which gas appliances they are qualified to work on.
